Current Water Management

St. Johns River Water Management District

The St. Johns River Water Management District is the modern heir to the multiple drainage districts formed in the early twentieth-century, though curiously their website doesn’t include this aspect of early Florida history. SJRWMD was created to manage the water resources of northeast and east central Florida, and within that function they monitor water quality and issues permits for development. The canals, lakes, and creeks that were part of the Lake Ashby drainage district now fall under the SJRWMD purview.
