Swamps & Soils

This page traces some of the archival newspaper evidence for the drainage district that improved farming in the Lake Ashby-Samsula area. The transcriptions are from the New Smyrna News unless otherwise noted. Transcriptions are from newspapers viewed through the NewspaperARCHIVE® database. In some cases I use brackets to signify that some text is missing or illegible in the original document, and I have entered what sounds most logical where appropriate for the sake of readability.
The land developed for farming was originally purchased and platted by an agency out of Chicago, Howe & Currier. This link gives some background, through newspaper coverage, of the planned communities.
